We say, or we are told rather, Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart. Why heart? What is the meaning of that “with all thy heart”? It has nothing to do with a fleshly organ, that we all know. Then what does it mean, “with all thy heart?” Well, let’s bring that language down to our own experience, and let us say that I am saying to you, “I love you with all my heart.” And what do you imagine that I mean by that? “I love you with all my heart.” I can only have one meaning. It means that I love you purely. I love you without motive; I love you without an idea of gain; I love you without any purpose in mind except-I just love you, that’s all. No reason, no hope for a return, no desire for anything on my part-I just love you, and because of that purity of motive, if that purity is there, I would say “I love you with all my heart.” To love God with all our heart can only mean that-to love God so purely that our love has in it no taint of desire for a return, no taint of self-interest, no taint of selfishness.
