“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4)
Throughout the ages there have been those who have discovered that man does not live merely by food and drink, work, rest and relaxation, but that there is another factor which is much more important than any of these human activities.
Once when the disciples became concerned about the Master, they asked if they should go to the city to buy meat, but He answered, “I have meat to eat that ye know not of…” In ordinary words of everyday living Jesus meant, “I do not live by meat, bread, wine and water alone. Certainly, I partake of food the same as you, but that is the least sustaining influence in my life. The Word of God, which I take into my thought and mediation, and which I ponder as I sit by the sea or when I go up into the mountains to pray, is really the meat of which the world knows nothing. That is why I can give you the living waters of Truth that spring up into life eternal. That is why I can remind you of the assurance of God’s Presence in all experiences, and the promises that ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’”
“Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” Today, as you go about your work, even though you go through fire, the flames will not kindle upon you, because the Word of God is in you and with you. The Word of God, which is the message of God’s help and God’s Grace towards man, becomes to you living water, meat, drink, energy and strength. The Word of God is your protection, your safety, and your security, and, as you carry this Word with you, you need have no fear for any of the problems or conditions that you meet out in the world.
Carry this with you as a prayer wherever you go and whatever your endeavor, whether in the home, in the factory, in the office, even while you are driving your car or marketing. Always remember there is a He within you, and this is the Word of God, or Spirit of Truth, and whenever confronted with what might seem to be an obstacle or a problem, pause for a moment and realize “He that is in you” is greater than any obstacle or problem which might ever arise.
This Word of God upheld in thought throughout the day and night will be a light unto your feet, it will be a staff upon which to lean, it will be your meat and drink. Should you in anywise encounter danger this Word will be your protection, it will assure you of safety and security, and should anything arise in your experience to disturb your peace or to give you the slightest fear, remember He that is within you is greater than he that is in the world.
From the moment you take the Word of God into your daily life, silently and secretly, a change begins to take place in you. No longer will you live by bread alone, nor by positions or bank accounts or human rights, but you will live by every Word that is brought into your thought, into your remembrance, into your conscious awareness.
Soon you will find friends and relatives remarking, “You are different, what has made this change in you?” You will be different, because you will have found the great secret of life—the secret given us by the Master: “the kingdom of God is within you.” It becomes evident and vital in your experience the moment you realize the kingdom of God through the Word of God, which becomes a part of your body, of your mind, or your being, and of your Soul.
In our complex present-day living we are confronted with many problems, but we have the key to successful living that has been known but too few people, even though it was given us over two thousand years ago: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” This Word held sacredly within our consciousness, becomes the living waters, the very staff of life.
