Starting The Contemplative Life
By Joel Goldsmith
Part 3 of 5
There is no way to gain love from the world or from the people of the world. None! Many have tried it; everyone fails. It can’t be accomplished. The only way is the way of spiritual Light – by loving, you become loved. There’s no other way.
Waiting first to be loved is like waiting for something to come from this blank space out here. You first must put it out here before it can flow back! You first must put the bread on the water before the bread can flow back to you. Only that which you put out here finds its way back here because in and of itself, this space has nothing to give us. Nothing. But, in proportion as we put something out here into space, that makes way for it to find its way back to us, “pressed down and running over.”
So it is that spiritual illumination begins with the realization of these simple things, all of which come from the basic premise that the Kingdom of God is established within you, and that for you to enjoy it, you have to find a way to bring it out.
Now then, as you meditate on these things, as you ponder, you come to a place where there’s nothing more to think about. You’ve said it all; you’ve thought it all; you’ve declared it or affirmed it. And now you come to the end of that, and you come to a place where, since there isn’t anything more to say, you become still. And you find that in the very moment that you achieve stillness, something jumps up here from within you – something of a transcendental nature, something of a not human nature. Something jumps up into your awareness, which you yourself are not declaring, affirming or stating, but which you are hearing! You are receiving from the depths of your withinness.
But you yourself have created the circumstance by means of which this can take place. You have known the truth, declared it, felt it, stated it, and then been still, as if you created a vacuum. And now up into that, the Voice Itself can announce Itself, and bring with it illumination.
The first step, always, is our consciously knowing the truth, our intellectually knowing the truth. And then, through this constant pondering, meditating, cogitating – bringing ourselves to the place where we’ve said it all and thought it all, and now are still – and then into that stillness and up from that stillness comes the very Light that we have been seeking.
Now you can see that it is necessary, first, to divest yourself of every bit of belief that God is a respecter of persons – or God is a respecter of religions, or God is a respecter of churches, or God is a respecter of races – and come clearly to see that God is a Spirit; that God is Life; that God is Love; that, actually, the presence of God is within you – the very place whereon thou standest is holy ground because the presence of God is there.
But, when you are declaring that about yourself, look up and notice all the hundreds of people in your neighborhood. And remember that whether or not they know this truth, you know that it is the truth about them because if you are not praying for your enemy, if you are not knowing the truth as a universal truth, you are again trying to pinch it off, or finitize it, or limit it. And God cannot be limited.
The next step is easier now than it would have been, but for the two previous steps. You now come to the place where you recognize that man cannot influence God; that man has no power over God’s creation; man has no jurisdiction over God’s world; man has no jurisdiction over God; man can’t get his way with God; man can’t get God to do his will or his way.
Therefore, the next need is that ability to be a beholder. Since I can’t influence God, at least I can watch what God is doing! I can become a witness to what God is doing – in my life, your life, his life, her life, or its life because remember this, that when the sun comes up in the morning, it comes up for Jews and Gentiles, and whites and blacks, and Orientals and Occidentals – it has no favorites. And if you want to watch the sun rise, you’ve got to be willing to acknowledge that the sun is rising for everybody in the community.
When you go out and watch the sugar growing or the pineapples growing, there’s no use of saying, “God is growing this for me, or for mine.” Just, “God is growing this, period!” God’s grace falls on the just and the unjust, and in Him there is neither Greek or Jew.
Always must be the remembrance, then, that what God is doing, God is doing – and needs not your help, and cannot be controlled by you. God’s grace can’t be stopped. Even if you think that you are in disobedience to His laws, God’s grace is still flowing. You may not get the benefit of it because you have cut yourself off from it.
It is very much like the subject we have had of karmic law – “as ye sow so shall ye reap.” God has nothing to do with your sowing or your reaping; it is “as ye sow ” or “if you sow to the flesh you reap corruption, if you sow to the Spirit you reap life everlasting.” And therefore, it is always “you.”
And, by your thoughts and actions of today, you’re determining your karma of tomorrow. By your sowing today, you’re determining your reaping tomorrow. So therefore, even though by some act of our own – whether it’s a disobedience to one or more of The Ten Commandments, or whether it’s just a violation of loving our neighbor as our self – whatever it is, if we have shut off health, safety, security, inner peace, don’t blame God for it – for God neither gives you peace nor takes it from you; God neither gives you health nor takes it from you; God neither gives you supply nor takes it from you.
God’s grace is as free as sunshine. If you like you can pull down the shades and never see it, and never feel it. But that’s your action, not God’s. As far as God is concerned, the sunshine is always there.
