Meditation on the Invisible 3/6

We do not know what we should pray for. Anyone who takes an idea of what they want into their prayer has not even the first concept of what prayer is all about. No one knows what to pray for. And no one can pray rightly for anything that they do know about. It’s another impossibility. Why? Because God is Spirit, and the blessings and benedictions of God are Spiritual.

We have been taught rather to limit ourselves and think of ourselves as unworthy to sit at the feet of God, or we have thought of ourselves as more devilish than children of God, offspring of God. And we now have to learn how to open our consciousness to the Infinity of God. God is Infinite that you know. But God is your life, and your life must be Infinite. God is Infinite that you know. But God is your mind; therefore, your mind, your wisdom, your intelligence must be Infinite. God is Infinite, but God is your soul. Therefore, your soul is Infinitely pure. Oh, you say, no I’m a sinner. Oh no you’re not. You’re no more a sinner than you are dumb, or poor, or sick. All of these states of limitation are things that we have entertained in our thought about ourselves, but they are not the truth about ourselves.

Just as, it’s only a few hundred years ago, that people stood at the edge of this great ocean and looked out and could only accept eight or ten or twelve miles of it. That’s all. For thousands of years, they’d been limited to standing on shore and just enjoying a few miles of ocean. Were there only a few miles of ocean? Were there only a few miles of ocean ahead of them? Oh no, no, three quarters of the Earth was ocean. But they had accepted the sense of limitation that held them bound to shore. In other words, it held them bound to all that was visible. And so they believed there was nothing else. Nothing else for them.

Then, 1492 Mr. Columbus comes along and proves to the world the Infinite nature of this globe. The Infinite nature of the ocean. And ever since then, we are shocked that anybody could stand on shore and stay there for fear that there was an end to the ocean. Ah someday, we will stop looking into our schooling, or our physical bodies, our minds, and saying that is my limitation, that is the extent of my being. No, no, no, someday we will look out from God. We will look out from the center of divine Consciousness, and then we will see the Infinite and the boundless nature of our being, and we will literally understand what is meant by “Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.” And we will know the reason. “I and the father are one. Thou seest me, thou seest the Father that sent me, for I and the Father are one.”

Now, as you open your consciousness to that—“all that the Father hath”—all that the Infinite nature of the Godhead flows out into individual expression to the extent that you can permit it. You can write one book and say, “oh, I’ve done a great thing and that’s more than I ever thought I could ever accomplish, and I’ll rest with that.” Or you could go on and write 20, or 30, or 40. If only you could get the realization that you never wrote one. That it was the Infinite inspiration of God that was pouring through and that it had no limitation. Just as a typewriter can say, “you could write a thousand books on me, if you want, because I’m not doing the writing. I’m an instrument for it.” And so as you can see and I can see that “I of my own self am nothing. My doctrine is not mine but his that sent me.” And then realize that we are instruments through which that Infinity is pouring forth that all we do is open the mind, take a pen in the hand, and let it write forever and forever, or draw, or do anything else that we want to do, or sew, or paint, or sculpt, or heal.

Now, tonight, our first point is this. In the realization of God, as your capacity, as your mind, soul, spirit, instead of limiting yourself, open up consciousness and let it flow. Realize that none of this is of you or of me, this is the Father pouring through, and then it will be unlimited. That must be the first point.

The second point is this: Do not look for a sign. Be very careful that you are not looking for a result, because it can’t come while you’re looking for it. The reason is this. No sign shall be given them. These signs shall follow. Well, you may say, I’m going to take piano lessons, but I want a sign first that it’s possible. Let me play a piece. Oh, you know that’s impossible. First must come the lessons. First must come the practice. Then will come the playing of the piece. So it is with this. Never think that you can demonstrate beyond your state of consciousness. Oh no, you can have demonstrations beyond your own state by turning to a practitioner, or teacher, and benefiting by their degree of spiritual awareness. That you can for a while. You could have many healings, many experiences of a spiritual nature. But you yourself will not be able to go beyond your developed state of consciousness, and so there’s no use looking for a result.

Give all attention to the Principle that you’re trying to demonstrate, and then the Principle will demonstrate itself in infinite measure in your experience. You will never demonstrate it. It will demonstrate itself in proportion to your awareness of it. Therefore, never think of a result. Never look for a sign. Concern yourself with only one thing: the attainment, the wisdom, the development of the Principle. Of the Principle, that’s all. Cling to the Principle, and let it produce the result in your experience. The moment you outline a result, the moment you plan a result, look for a result, design a result, it isn’t there and can’t be there.

One of the great reasons is this: We do not know what we should pray for.

Now to turn around and say, “I will pray for rent, for companionship, for home, for supply, for employment.” Might as well stop right now. It has been proven a failure for the last 30 years, in more ways than one, outlining what to pray for and then going out to get it. It won’t work. It’ll turn and rend you. Yes, yes like we’re told of old, the girl that prayed for a husband and got him and was sorry for it. So, it is often we pray for something specific and get it and regret it. Why? It doesn’t lie within our human awareness to know that which is good for us to have. It just doesn’t.

We may think that we want a home and we want it here in the islands. We have no right to think that at all. It may be a nice human place to live, and we may, if it’s possible, like to live here. But never outline such a thing. Never, never, never, nor anything else that you think of as desirable at this moment. Why? Because God is Spirit, and let the blessings of God come to you in a Spiritual way, and then you will find why it is that a book written in Hawaii can influence some religious groups in Ohio, because nobody planned it that way. Nobody saw it that way. Nobody hoped it that way. Nobody outlined it that way.
