Now, you know as well as I do, many of you do I’m sure, that when “The Infinite Way” was written I had no idea of it ever going beyond the 2,000 copies that were originally printed. I had no idea of it spreading throughout the world, but it has, and I’m sure that when Don did his “Joy is an Inside Job,” he didn’t see religious groups being up in other cities. Taking out grains of sand of spiritual truth, grains of spiritual truth, and on those building a foundation in this city, in that city, in the other city. Certainly not, nobody knows when the Light of God touches his consciousness, how far reaching it can be.
You think of it first only as meeting your need. Just as when I began the study of spiritual things I had only one thing in mind. I had a hunger in here, an unsatisfied sense, and all I was interested in was becoming satisfied, having something meet my need. And you see how far spread that has been, and so with everyone who has entered this path. It has either been through a physical, mental, moral, or financial lack, or a sense of instability, or insecurity, or some other negative sense, and they have come to have that satisfied, fulfilled.
Then from there on, the Light has spread and in the case of some people, our Jesus Christ and Isaiah, John and Paul, and many others of these great seers, sages, saints. Their Light has gone all over the world and touched the lives of many. In this era, all of these prayer groups, whether they reach out and find Dr. Peale, or Dr. Fox, or whether they find Infinite Way or whether they find “Joy is an Inside Job,” or whether they find anything else that leads them to a higher sense of prayer, they are bringing to this world peace on Earth and goodwill among men. And that’s what’s happening in the world today.
So, it behooves us, as we meet in groups like this, to attain the highest sense of prayer that we can. All forms of prayer are good from “Now I lay me down to sleep,” because all forms of prayer really mean a negating of oneself and a declaration that I of my own self can’t do this, so I’m reaching out to that which is greater than I. I may have one concept of God and you another, but at least I have gotten to the place where I realize my own insufficiency, and now I’m coming forth into that which is higher, and ultimately, if I remain on the path, I will go through all the various stages of prayer, until I come to the ultimate of prayer, which is without words and without thoughts.
True prayer is never uttered in thought or in word. All prayers that have thoughts and words mixed up in them are but steppingstones to the higher sense of prayer. Now by that I don’t mean that we are to eliminate all our early stages of prayer, because that’s virtually impossible. That is as impossible as doing away with the learning of the multiplication table. We need these as steppingstones. But to come to the effective fervent prayer of “a righteous man that availeth much” that James talks about, to come to a state of prayer that actually brings God into individual experience or collective experience and reveals the Christ, that prayer is a wordless and thoughtless prayer.
Now, it is attained by stages. I don’t know for what reason it was given us this way, but in the monthly letter that is now in preparation, we have the subject of prayer from a higher state than has heretofore been given us in the writings. And then, when we come to May, we have a combination of prayer from the standpoint of treatment in which we realize truth leading us up to that place where we leave all human landmarks, leave all thoughts, all words, and enter into the spirit of prayer itself. When we enter that realm, we enter the prayer of demonstration. The prayer where the word, that is the spirit of God, becomes flesh.
Now, if we take one of these subjects each week and practice, meditate, entertain, or eventually become aware of some sense of inner feeling from that statement of truth, we will be led onto the next.
I’m going back a little bit. In bringing this subject to your attention, the greatest problem that I run into is that people believe they haven’t enough understanding to begin this with. And so I’m going to repeat. That there isn’t anyone in this room, there isn’t anyone in this city, and there isn’t anyone on the face of the Earth who hasn’t enough understanding to begin to enter the kingdom of God this very night. Just as the thief on the cross was enabled to enter paradise in just a few hours, so are we able to enter paradise, regardless of where we stand at this present moment, and the reason is this. Truth is infinite. And any one statement of Truth that you know is the symbol of infinity. And this one statement of Truth entertained in your consciousness will be found to be sufficient to meet any need that can arise in your experience. That sounds strange, doesn’t it? One, one statement of Truth brought to the point of realization within you can bring about healing of any discord, of any name, of any nature, but it will do more than that. Much more than that.
It will prove the Infinite nature of itself by immediately appearing to you in another statement of Truth. Out of that one statement that you know, a second one will appear to you, even if you consciously do not know two statements of Truth. Of course, everyone knows more than one statement of Truth, even though many of their Truths are way back here in consciousness, and they may not even have, we may not even have a conscious remembrance of them. Yet the moment you bring one statement of Truth to conscious remembrance, ponder it, hold it, meditate upon it, you are opening the way for the second one to follow, and if you keep it up, you will find that you can keep it up for an entire year and never run short of Truth. Eventually, you’ll find original statements of Truth coming, statements you never heard before, and the reason is simple.
And this is the basic premise of the entire work. God is individual consciousness. God is your mind, and therefore, your awareness is as deep as that of God, because it is God Itself in expression. You are the outlet. We are the outlet for all that God is and all that God has. “Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.” Never doubt that statement of Truth that “all that the Father hath is ours,” whether it is all of health, all of wealth, all of wisdom, all of anything. We may not at any given moment be demonstrating it. And the reason is that we do not open our capacity to God capacity.
